Well day two is over and we are starting day three now. Jen is getting some much needed sleep and I just got out of the shower. I am staying awake to make sure that the nursery doesn't miss our next feeding time.
The nursery is full tonight and has a few trouble babies so our feeding times are sometimes being missed when they have to prioritize their tasks. I guess this is what I get for sleeping most of the night Monday and Tuesday.
Emma is sleeping a good deal, and is usually groggy when we bring her in for feedings. Generally by the time we get her back to the nursery she has started to perk up and then it takes her awhile to settle into the bed in the nursery. I try to stick with her until she is settled, the nurses have lots more experience than I do, but I figure having her Dad around can't hurt any.
We are starting to use a pacifier some, mostly just trying to calm Emma down in the nursery. We wanted to avoid this to mitigate any nipple confusion issues, but when it comes to her being nipple confused or being miserable for hours in the nursery we are siding with nipple confusion.
Emma is still messing diapers within the expectations, which is reassuring. I can see now why breastfeeding is such a challenge. Between the pain and fear that you are starving your baby the stress is pretty intense. Jen's body seems to be changing properly so all the signs are pointing toward successful breast feeding, but we will be kind of on edge until her milk comes in fully. Hopefully that will be by Friday.
To keep track of our successes with breastfeeding I started an Excel Spreadsheet today to track feedings and diapers. It isn't anything more than a copy of what the lactation specialist gave us, but this way we don't run out of pages and it's easier to track, for me at least. Hopefully this will be a good tool this week.
On a lighter note. We went home between feedings this afternoon and I neglected to bring another change of underwear. Greg (Sting) remember that conversation about just how long you could wear underwear before it just didn't work any more? Yeah, somethings just don't change. Sorry everyone else I just couldn't resist.
Well it's almost that time again so I am going to make my way to the nursery, good night everyone, we love you.
